“Surviving” → Navigating | Designing for Climate Good
I believe simple design changes can often be the most effective. During a time of accelerating climate change, my goal in this role was to highlight sustainable transportation in the best narrative possible. One of these changes included updating “Surviving UCI without a Car” to “Navigating UCI without a Car,” in a mailer to every incoming UCI student. This shift pivoted away from negative stigmas surrounding sustainable transportation and instead highlighted empowerment, inclusiveness, and freedom of choice in car-free living. This change didn’t just stay on one graphic—it prompted a full update across our brand materials, from digital flyers to websites, and it was well worth implementing. By erasing stigma and redefining the narrative, I aimed to make sustainable options feel accessible and enticing. Design isn’t just about good visuals, but purposeful communication and societal impact, something I keep meticulously in mind every time I design. I firmly believe that human-centered design is one of the most effective tools we have for advancing a sustainability-first agenda in a critical era.
